Kim’s Singing History

Hello and welcome to Kim’s Musical Musings!  It’s me, Kim Woycke and I’ll be using this section of my site to provide updates, news, facts and tips!  I’ve created this first post to tell you about my singing history.

My Early Singing Days

I grew up in Cedarburg, Wisconsin and have been singing ever since I can remember.  (I remember my friends in elementary school asking me, “Do you ALWAYS hum?”).  My parents quickly took note of my non-stop musical expression, and  they signed me up for various choirs and musicals to fuel my passion.  I performed in school choir, band and musicals in elementary, middle and high school.  I also sang outside of school with The Milwaukee Children’s Choir (under the direction of Emily Crocker), and Accompany of Kids (a song a dance-group that performed at various festivals and events throughout the greater Milwaukee area).

Private instruction

I began private voice lessons in 7th grade under the tutelage of Jenny Gettel.  She helped me gain a solid understanding of vocal technique and a basic knowledge of classical and musical theater repertoire.  As a NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) member, Jenny provided me with various opportunities to perform for critique.

In addition to studying with Jenny, during my collegiate years I had the opportunity to study privately with Tessa Lang, Lynn Martingale and Rosemary Loar.

Collegiate Studies

After graduating from Cedarburg High School (and performing in 4 school musicals, and all 4 choirs) I headed to New York City to attend New York University and CAP21.  Focusing specifically on Musical Theater Performance, I studied voice, acting and dance from top Broadway performers and instructors.  I graduated with a BFA in Drama in 2009.

Musical Theater Instruction in Illinois

After moving to Lake Zurich in 2012 I began teaching drama, dance and directing children’s musical theater at Trilogy School of Performing Arts.  I directed 5 years of shows including Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast, Cinderella, High School Musical, Peter Pan, Seussical, Alice in Wonderland and The Little Mermaid.  While directing at Trilogy, I found that several of my performers were looking for additional instruction in vocal technique, and so I began teaching private voice lessons.  In 2017 I stopped directing the musicals in order to focus more completely on my family and my private students.

Currently…

I currently teach students grades 6-12 out of my home studio in Hawthorn Woods.  We work on musical theater and classical vocal repertoire, concentrating on developing a solid foundation of vocal technique.  My teaching style is student-centered, focusing on the specific needs and goals of each individual student.  Due to my extensive musical theatre training, my voice lessons also frequently including acting and performance techniques.  I am a new NATS member and am excited to provide my students with even greater opportunities to learn and perform.
